Position: Workshop Assistant (Full-Time)

Location: London, U.K.

Start: As soon as possible

Job Summary:

We are seeking a motivated, hands-on, well-organized workshop assistant to join us at our studio in central London. This is an ideal role for a recent graduate of a violin making school or a passionate craftsperson with fine woodworking experience who is eager to gain exposure to the highest level of contemporary violin making and contribute to the smooth operation of a professional workshop.

The role centres on ensuring the daily rhythm and coordination of the workshop — from tool care and organisation to materials ordering, inventory, and scheduling — while also assisting the master luthier with operational tasks such as travel preparation and supply management.

Depending on the candidate’s level of skill in violin making or woodworking, they may also be given hands-on tasks to support instrument production or workshop processes under guidance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Open and prepare the workshop each morning; close it at day’s end

  • Maintain workshop order and cleanliness on a daily basis

  • Sharpen and maintain tools

  • Track and organise materials, parts, and instrument components

  • Conduct regular stock checks and coordinate supply orders

  • Pack, track, and assist with shipping instruments and materials

  • Maintain workshop calendar and production scheduling documents

  • Support the master luthier with errands, supply needs, and occasional travel coordination

  • Ensure the environment is ready each day for focused, high-level craft work

  • Depending on experience, assist with selected hands-on tasks related to the making

Candidate Requirements:

  • A junior violin maker, lutherie graduate, or craftsperson with a background in fine woodworking

  • Highly organised, responsible, and tidy

  • Calm, proactive, and capable of anticipating what is needed next

  • Comfortable working around fine instruments, sharp tools, and delicate materials

  • Confident using Google Drive (Sheets, Docs), Microsoft Office, and quick to learn internal systems

  • Based in or near London, with the legal right to work in the UK

  • Occasionally involve travel abroad to support workshop sessions — this is optional, but availability to travel is a plus.

  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written
