The Alf Studios Mentors program extends this tradition — offering professors and teachers a way to connect their students with our instruments, our fellowship, and our ongoing initiatives. Joining is simple, without cost, and opens access to resources designed to strengthen both craft and mentorship.

Our Instruments

For more than fifty years Gregg T. Alf has stood at the forefront of contemporary violin making, trusted by respected voices across the field. From creating some of the most admired replicas of their generation at Curtin & Alf to curating international exhibitions of Stradivari and Guarneri, his career has been shaped by a deep engagement with the greatest instruments of the past.

Renowned for their projection and tonal depth, his violins give musicians both power and nuance on stage, and are heard in the greatest performing halls around the world. Each is crafted with the same seriousness of purpose: to serve the musician’s voice and to continue a living tradition of artistry.

Alf Studios Prodigy Fellowship

Crafted to give one exceptional young artist access to a Gregg T. Alf Concert Violin.

The Fellowship is about continuity: placing a concert violin in the hands of a gifted student during the most decisive stage of their development. It is not a prize for a season, but a long-term commitment — ensuring that the musician can grow, perform, and find their voice with an instrument built for the concert stage.

Nominations are made exclusively through Alf Studios Mentors. Only one student may be nominated per mentor, ensuring that the fellowship remains focused on those who truly need its support.

Access to Instruments

Through Alf Studios Mentors, students gain access to the Alf Studios Signature Violins: a family of instruments that includes both the Alf Studios Concert Violin and the Gregg T. Alf Concert Violin, each crafted to serve musicians at different stages of their journey.

    • Crafted in our workshop from Gregg Alf’s models and wood, under his artistic direction.

    • Priced between $18,000 and $25,000, designed for advanced students and young professionals.

    • Built to project, to carry a student confidently into professional settings.

    • Full-value trade-in, giving a clear path toward a future Gregg T. Alf commission.

    Each instrument carries its own merit, yet may later be returned at full value toward a new commission, creating a continuous path in the musician’s artistic growth.

    • Fully bespoke commissions, crafted personally by Gregg T. Alf.

    • Priced at $55,000 all-inclusive in U.S.

    • Gregg Alf’s signature concert violin, the culmination of 50 years of making.

    • Alf Studios instruments available on loan while the commission is being completed.

Priority Access

Through decades of working with young musicians, we understand that students cannot wait years for an instrument. At the moment they are ready, the violin becomes an essential tool — and waiting is not an option. For this reason, Alf Studios Mentors are given priority in our production schedule, ensuring that their students receive instruments when they are needed most.

Studio Conversations

Reflections from the bench

Beginning October 2025, Gregg Alf will publish monthly reflections from the bench and host open conversations with mentors. These articles and calls will offer space to explore questions of sound, artistry, and the challenges musicians face today.

Studio Conversation

Each article will be accompanied by an open Monthly Studio Conversation, where mentors, students, and colleagues can join Gregg Alf in informal discussion. These conversations are open to all, part of our wider commitment to sharing knowledge.

Educational Grants

We know the commitment it takes to guide students at decisive moments in their careers. To acknowledge this role, Alf Studios Mentors receive an educational grant for each commission that arises through their referral.

The grant is intended as support, and may be used in the way that best serves you and your student — whether for your studio, professional development, or credited toward the student’s instrument.

Masterclasses & Workshops

Gregg Alf offers masterclasses and workshops that draw on over fifty years of experience with fine instruments, from the bench to major exhibitions. Held virtually or in person, these sessions give students a deeper understanding of their instruments and provide teachers with an added dimension of support.

Commitment of Care

Every instrument is accompanied by care and support, ensuring that students are never left on their own.

  • Three years of comprehensive coverage included, followed by access to low-cost all-risk worldwide protection for every concert.

  • Each instrument is issued with a certificate, bill of sale, and appraisal.
