Alf Studios Concert Violin

Eduard Miller, Ann Arbor, 2012

Guarneri del Gesù │ ‘Lord Wilton’ model

  • Crafted at Alf Studios under the close mentorship of Gregg Alf, this full-size violin by Eduard Miller draws inspiration from the famed Guarneri del Gesù ‘Lord Wilton’ — a model renowned for its robust character and soloistic power. At the time of crafting, Eduard was apprenticing under Gregg’s guidance, and this instrument reflects both technical discipline and a sensitivity to tonal architecture. The violin features a one-piece back of strongly flamed European maple, cut on the quarter, with a medium curl ascending to the right — a nod to the classical Cremonese aesthetic. The scroll and ribs are crafted from matching maple, while the top is formed from two pieces of finely grained European spruce, even and consistent across the width. The orange-brown varnish, laid over a golden ground and finished with a light antiquing, adds warmth and depth to an instrument that is built for sound. An excellent representation of the Alf Studio Concert Violin series, it offers tonal complexity, warmth, and projection — qualities at the heart of our tradition.

Alf Studios Concert Violin

Walter Mahoney, Ann Arbor, 2010

Guarneri del Gesù │ ‘Lafont’ model

  • This violin by Walter Mahoney was crafted at Alf Studios under the discipline and direction of Gregg Alf, drawing from the Guarneri del Gesù “Lafont” model — known for its bold presence and deeply expressive tonal palette. The two-piece back is cut on the quarter from strongly flamed maple, with a broad, irregular curl that descends gently from the center, lending the instrument a striking visual character. The scroll and ribs are crafted from similarly figured maple, complementing the back’s natural dynamism. The top, carved from two pieces of spruce with a somewhat heavier grain, broadens slightly toward the flanks, offering both visual and acoustic balance. Finished with a warm orange-brown varnish over a golden ground and is lightly antiqued. This violin exemplifies the hallmarks of the Alf Studio Concert Violin line — depth, complexity, and projection.
