About Gregg

Born into an artistic family in Los Angeles in 1957, Gregg is widely respected as one of the leading violinmakers of our time. Musically inclined from childhood, he made his first violin in 1975 and moved to Cremona at age nineteen, graduating from the International Violinmaking School “Antonio Stradivari” in 1980.

Returning to the United States in 1984, Gregg co-founded Curtin & Alf with Joseph Curtin - an influential collaboration that remains a reference point for many contemporary makers. His work has received the highest honours at international competitions and exhibitions, including multiple Gold Medals and the Violin Society of America’s “Hors Concours” designation.

Today, Alf Studios is a family-run atelier, with Gregg working alongside his son Leo from London, UK. His instruments are placed with some of today’s most highly regarded musicians and discerning institutions worldwide. Shaped by half a century of close dialogue with concert artists - and hands-on experience with rare Italian instruments - Gregg’s work combines tradition with innovation to create instruments of exceptional power, clarity, and complexity.

A widely respected teacher and advocate for openness within the craft, Gregg regularly lectures internationally, serves as a competition judge, and has curated landmark exhibitions including the 2016 Messiah Stradivari Exhibition in Cremona and the Tokyo Stradivarius Festival (2018).
