We have examined today a viola presented to us by Riccardo Guaraldi, described herein. In our expert opinion, this instrument is a 1979 copy of a Stefano Scarampella made by Mario Gadda, bearing the label:

Mario Gadda

1979

and also a facsimile Stefano Scarampella label from 1891

This viola is a woodwork replica of a Stefano Scarampella using a one-piece back cut on the quarter from nicely medium-flamed maple. The curl is of medium to narrow width and descends slightly to the bass side. The scroll is of similar similar wood. The one-piece top is of broad grain spruce and remains even towards the flanks. Within the interior lies the signature of Mario Gadda, and below the saddle rests a firebrand marked 'MG’. The viola is finished with a red-orange varnish on a golden ground and is antiqued to match an original Stefano Scarampella.
